In return for a remuneration, the Climate Cent Foundation has acquired CO2 emissions reductions generated by companies which had concluded a voluntary target agreement with the Swiss Confederation in the sector of motor fuels or combustibles.
General information
The target agreements had been drawn up under the stewardship of the Energie-Agentur der Wirtschaft (EnAW), in most cases with a view to a later exemption from the carbon tax. All companies were eligible that had been members of EnAW before 1 November 2006 and were party to an approved target agreement with the Swiss Confederation. Furthermore, the offered quantity of CO2 reductions over the years 2007-12 had to amount to at least 250 tonnes.
Combustibles
Companies with target agreements in the combustibles sector could only sell to the Foundation overfulfilments of their target agreement. This was to ensure that the target pledged by the company was achieved whatever happened. For CO2 reductions in the combustibles sector, the price was determined at auction. In two auction rounds, the Climate Cent Foundation acquired overfulfilments by 242 companies with target agreements in the combustibles sector, totalling 1.31 million tonnes of CO2 over the period 2008 to 2012. In the first auction round, CO2 emissions reductions were acquired at a price of 70 Swiss Francs per tonne, in the second auction round at a price of 100 Swiss Francs per tonne. Motor fuels
For companies with target agreements in the motor fuels sector, special rules were negotiated with the Swiss Confederation regarding the imputation of CO2 reductions. All companies received a flat rate of 125 Swiss Francs per tonne of CO2. By December 2010, the Foundation had signed a contract with 83 companies with target agreements in the motor fuels sector. Overall, these should yield emissions reductions of 0,22 million tonnes of CO2 over the period 2008 to 2012. Rules for motor fuels (in German)
