Biogas project in Honduras
Project
The Small-Scale CDM project (project realised in a developing country) com-prises the recovery of biogas from the waste water of palm oil production as well as the subsequent generation of electricity with the extracted biogas.
Project owner
Energía Ecológica de Palcasa S.A. owns 20% of Palmas Centroamericanas S.A. (PALCASA) and 80% of palm fruit producers who are also members of PALCASA (450 members in total). PALCASA s main activity is the extraction of palm oil. Every year, in addition to 16'000 tonnes of crude palm oil, 100'000 tonnes of palm fruit also produce 68'000 m3 of waste water.

The project consists of two activities. In a first step, methane originating in the anaerobic part of the waste water system of the production of palm oil is collected. In a second step, the methane is used for the production of electricity, which is fed into the grid on the premises. The electricity production plant has a capacity of 1 MW and generates around 5.5 GWh per year. The anaerobic system consists of two waste water ponds, from which an annual 3 million m3 of biogas escape. By covering the ponds with a plastic sheet, the methane can be collected and processed in a digestion tank. The project was successfully registered with the competent UN executive body in early September 2006. The biogas plant has been operating since that same month. The project is thus already generating first emission reductions.
