Transmilenio bus project in Columbia

Project

Old buses with limited passenger capacity as well as journeys with taxis and private vehicles are replaced by an efficient bus transportation system.

Project owner

The project is owned by the municipal company TransMilenio S.A., which was founded specifically for this purpose and operates the urban mass transporta-tion system. The multilateral development bank An-dean Development Corporation (CAF), which assists the sustainable development of its member countries and their regional integration, is a project participant.

Initial situation

The project will replace over 9'000 inefficient buses which are over 15 years old, taxi rides and journeys with private vehicles.

Due to Klimarappen

The new bus system consists of over 130 km of reserved bus lanes, bus stations following the metro model and a modern, centralised fleet management and information system, which ensures an optimal capacity utilisation of the buses in circulation. 1'200 new articulated buses with a capacity of 160 passengers as well as 500 new buses with a capacity of 70-90 passengers will be deployed. Every day, the new system will transport 1.8 million people.

Savings

The proceeds from the sale of CERs significantly reduce the costs per kilometer of the new bus lines construction. The Foundation acquires roughly 10% or 167'000 CERs of the certificates generated by the project.
