Initial situation
Substantial potential still remains in Switzerland as regards the improved utilisation of waste heat, and this applies not only to waste incineration or sewage plants.

At the Riburg saltworks in Möhlin, a heat exchanger makes it possible to recover currently unused heat from a variety of processes. Heat can also be gained from excess steam. The energy is fed into a yet to be constructed district heating system, which supplies a school building, a hospital, a clinic and two health resorts. The users' heat requirements are currently covered with fuel oil and natural gas, which will still be used in future to cover peak loads and emergencies.
Savings
Once completed to full extension in 2009, the project should replace 185'000 litres of fuel oil and 1'000'000 m3 of natural gas with waste heat, leading to CO2 reductions of 12'100 tonnes over the period 2008 to 2012. Only the Foundation's contribution allows AEW to offer users a competitive price for heat while at the same time realising an appropriate return.
Investments
AEW Energie AG is implementing the project as contractor. It pays the Riburg saltworks a fixed price for the heat and shoulders the total investment of 9.0 million Swiss Francs.
