Tuki Wasi Programme, Peru

General information

The Tuki Wasi Programme in Peru is the only successful pilot activity carried out by the Climate Cent Foundation for the implementation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The programme, which was aimed at the poorest levels of society, was developed in 2017 and became operational in February 2019. It has strengthened the market for efficient cookers in Peru thanks to competitive calls for proposals and standardisation (www.tukiwasi.org).

In November 2021, together with the programme owner Microsol S.A.S., the Foundation signed a sales contract for the acquisition of ITMOs once the legal framework for the issuance and transfer of such certificates had been created with the conclusion of an Implementation Agreement between Switzerland and Peru in October 2020.

In specific terms, the Foundation – and in turn the KliK Foundation – will receive 960,000 ITMOs from Microsol up until 2030. In the period between 2022 and 2025 it is anticipated that a total of 60,000 cookers will be installed. The Foundation will be financing the scaling of the programme and in particular the construction of the cookers using more than half of the contract funds.

Current status

With the conclusion of the pilot phase that was begun in 2018, in which 1,000 cookers were installed according to prescribed specifications, the actual project began in earnest in the summer of 2022. With two public calls for proposals, two further cooker producers in addition to the two cooker manufacturers already identified in the pilot phase were accepted into the programme. In line with the tenders, the construction of 33,000 cookers has been contracted, around 7,500 of which have already been built so far.

The validation of the programme was concluded in June 2023, the next stage being the authorisation by both the partner states. To date, the necessary national processes for the authorisation have not yet been established in Peru.
